Beckham’s Boys

David Beckham is training his boys hard, even on holiday, to follow in Daddy’s footsteps: not as footballers but as models.

This pretty picture of the Beckham clan (the male side) posing in the surf in Malibu, shows just how accustomed we all are now, to the Metrotastic brand Beckham.

Even The Mail presents Becks as a supermodel without so much as batting an eyelid:

‘He usually only strikes a pose if there’s a hefty number of zeros after the pound sign’.

Of course, Beckham was ‘outed’ as a metro exhibitionist a long time ago now, back in 2002, by Mark Simpson, in his seminal Salon article: Meet The Metrosexual.

But it still seems worth noting just how unremarkable it is, to everybody,  to see David and sons in such a ‘feminine’, narcissistic mode, and even sending this up in a knowing (but still camp) way.  With all those princesses in the family, I wonder how poor Harper is going to cope!

Redpesto, a regular commenter and GraunWatcher, just told me about Beckham’s latest pants range for H and M. I don’t normally like Hadley Freeman, but I agree with her comments on this latest not-very-radical-infact-utterly-predictable move into The High Street by Becks:

‘I can at least say with some certainty that Beckham has spent a lot of time in pants. In fact, I find it hard to think of him wearing anything other than just a pair of pants ‘

And as redpesto says in the comments, can you think of anything more Metrosexy than men wanting to get into Beckham’s own brand pants? No, I don’t think I can!

Coco Perez takes it all one step further and calls Becks’ new pants range ‘Manties’. Which, in Fag UP! terminology, is ‘fagties’. I’d say that was a metrosexy hatrick!

QRG: “With all those princesses in the family, I wonder how poor Harper is going to cope!”

Answer: By being the best footballer.

PS: I see you resisted the temptation to show Beckham in underwear (see the paper copy of today’s Guardian). Incidentally, how metrosexy is the idea of men getting into David Beckham’s (own brand) pants?

    • That would be ace, redpesto if she became a footballer!

well I showed Beckham in underwear on the last post. I can’t do it every time!

It is very metrosexy, the men in Becks’ pants image!

Ooh, I’m honoured with that name-check ATL. Incidentally, I’m wondering if there are any other sports stars with their own underwear range, but the only one I can think of is Bjorn Borg…but that might mean metrosexuality’s roots go back further than we assumed…
