The wonderful Betty of 52 Seductions fame, kindly posted my ten favourite ‘love songs’ on her blog. Each one tells a story, and some of the stories are happier than others. Here they are anyway:

The saddest song for me is probably Who Are You? by Tom Waits. Maybe I will tell the story behind it one day. I kind of have, in fragments, if you have been paying attention. But the line that sums it all up is:
‘Are you pretending to love? Well I hear that it pays well. How do your pistol and your Bible and your sleeping pills go? Are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?’
I confess I hadn’t head the Tom Waits song before, but it’s gut-wrenching. Great lyrics.
this is the film it reminds me of a little- particularly the ‘jumping out of windows in expensive clothes’
